Areas of interest

* Northern Sardinia

The northern coastal areas of the island are the headquarters of Gennaria diphylla and also a favoured habitat for Serapias nurrica. Of particular interest is the coastal garrigue around Palau in the east and Stintino to the west. Ophrys morisii, Gennaria diphylla, Serapias nurrica, Serapias cordigera.

*
Muros.

This small town is situated to the southeast of Sassari and the surrounding garrigue is orchid rich territory. The province of Sassari is the home for the very early flowering O. praecox and an exploraration of suitable habitat along the SP3 north and south of Muros is likely to yield both this species and many others. Orchis simia, Orchis purpurea, Ophrys lepida, Ophrys praecox, Ophrys morisii, Ophrys annae, N. lactea.

+Arborea.

This is an area on the west side of the island, south of Oristano and with an extensive stretch of coastal pinetta. It could not be described as orchid rich but is a home for the scarce Serapias nurrica. Ophrys lepida, Anacamptis longicornu, Limodorum trabutianum, Serapias nurrica.

*Tempio di Antas.

This temple is situated amongst the high mountains of the south west corner of the island, to the north of Inglesias. A track meanders from this site for approximately 30kms south eastwards to the northern portal of the Grotte di San Giovanni at Domusnovas. The length of the track is negotiable by car but is not one for the faint hearted.
Ophrys chestermanii, Ophrys normanii, Ophrys zonata, Ophrys eleonorae, Ophrys morisii, Orchis ichnusae.

*Laconi.

This mountainous part of central Sardinia must rank as one of Europe's most orchid rich regions. The area between Laconi and Meano Sardo produces not just a great range of species, but is also the home of one of Europes rarest orchids, Ophrys ortuabis. The two major roads that through the district are the SS128 and the circular SP52, both of which run through large areas of garrigue and woodland. Some of the verges along the SP52 are ablaze with the vivid colours of Anacamptis papilionacea and longicornu and a more careful search will reveal many other species in their midst.  Ophrys funerea, Ophrys eleonrae, Ophrys lepida, Ophrys corsica, Ophrys zonata, Ophrys annae, Ophrys ortuabis, Orchis ichnuae,

*Dorgali.

This is small town perched high in the mountains of the east coast and is at the centre of the distribution of the Sardinian endemic Ophrys pattanensis. If you take a drive down and explore the verges and surrounding countryside along the SS125 south of the town, you may well encounter this and several other species. Ophrys eleonorae, Ophrys panattensis, Ophrys morisii, Orchis branciforti.

*Monte Albo

From Lula take the SP3 towards Siniscola and this will take you along a mountain road running beneath the lengthy limestone massif of Monte Alba. Orchids can be found along the roadside banks and verges throughout its length.
Ophrys eleonrae, Ophrys lepida, Ophrys zonata, Ophrys annae, Orchis ichnuae, Dactylorhiza insularis, Anacamptis collina.
