Areas of interest * Parque Natural Valles Occidentales This large and beautiful National Park actually lies just to the east of Navarre Province in Huesca, near the border with France. It is full of both botanical and ornthological interest and sitting as it does in the shadow of the high Pyrenees, possesses a flora and fauna that is heavily influenced by alpine conditions. Ophrys apifera, Ophrys spegodes, Ophrys scolopax, Ophrys insectifera, Ophrys fusca, Cypripedium calceolus, Anacamptis laxiflora, Dactylorhiza sambucina, Dactylorhiza elata, Orchis pallens, Orchis anthropophorum, Orchis langei, Limodorum abortivum, Serapias lingua. * Artieda From the town of Lumbier take the N-150 northwards and this brings you into a largely agricultural landscape but one which (particularly north of Artieda) is punctuated with areas of abandoned cultivation and rough, sometimes rocky terrain. These areas can be rich in orchids and are home to the curious Ophrys riojana. The NA-2455 road that leaves westwards from Artieda also offers opportunities for exploration, especially west of Grez. Ophrys arnoldii, Ophrys sphegodes, Ophrys speculum, Ophrys riojana, Ophrys castellana, Ophrys scolopax, Ophrys fusca, Orchis italica, Orchis simia. * Parque Natural Aralar This National park lies to the north west of Pamplona straddling the Navarra and Basque Country border and is a large area comprising several habitat types from grazed upland meadow to extensive mixed woodland. Orchids are not abundant but the park offers a good range of species. Ophrys arnoldii, Ophrys sphegodes, Ophrys speculum, Ophrys castellana, Ophrys scolopax, Ophrys fusca, Cephalanthera longifolia, Limodorum abortivum, Neottia nidus-avis, Neotinia ustulata, Neotinea maculata, Orchis italica, Orchis simia. * Erro From Pamplona take the N-135 north and you quickly find yourself in a landscape of hilly woodland and light agriculture, interspersed with occasional areas of scrub and rough abandoned meadows. This is good orchid habitat and especially between the villages of Agoretta and Espinal. Suitable sites around the small town of Erro will often produce numbers of the very local Ophrys subinsectifera, a yellow Fly Orchid endemic to the Provinces of Navarre and Huesca. Ophrys insectifera, Ophrys subinsectifera, Ophrys sphegodes, Ophrys arnoldii, Ophrys fusca, Ophrys bilunulata, Orchis langei, Orchis mascula, Orchis purpurea, Neotinea ustulata, Platanthera bifolia. * Natural Reserve Basaula Situated to the west of Pamplona, this reserve is again a mecca for ornithologists but nonetheless holds a good variety of orchid species, particularly in the deciduous woodland on the flanks and floor of the ravine. Ophrys arnoldii, Ophrys sphegodes, Ophrys insectifera, Ophrys subinsectifera, Ophrys scolopax, Ophrys fusca, Cephalanthera longifolia, Limodorum abortivum, Neottia nidus-avis, Neotinia ustulata, Neotinea maculata, Orchis italica, Orchis purpurea, Orchis simia, Orchis langei. * Aizkorbe From Pamplona take the AP-15 north west towards Irurtzun but approximately 2kms before the town take the N-240-A to Aizkorbe. The rough pasture and woodland to the north and east of the village is rich orchid country and especially noted for the presence of the very scarce Ophrys vasconica. Ophrys arnoldii, Ophrys fusca, Ophrys vasconica, Ophrys tenthredenifera, Ophrys sphegodes, Orchis provincialis, Orchis purpurea, Orchis langeiSerapias lingua, Serapias vomeracea. | ||
