Areas of interest Southern Chios * Armolia The area around this town is rich in orchids; verges and terraces alongside the road to Pyrgi are of particular interest. Ophrys regis-fernandii, Ophrys minutula, Ophrys sitiaca, Ophrys parosica, Ophrys homeri, Ophrys lindia. * Pyrgi This is again an area rich in orchids, notably along the road to Olympi and smaller roads to the south of the town. Ophrys attaviria, Ophrys omegaifera, Ophrys sitiaca, Ophrys regis-fernandii. + Kato Fana A town on the far south coast which offers orchid interest both on the approach roads to the town and along the extensive garrigue behind the beaches. Ophrys attaviria, Ophrys blitopertha, Ophrys minutula, Ophrys lindia, Ophrys parosica, Ophrys regis-fernandii, Ophrys sitiaca, Ophrys labiosa, Orchis punctulata. * Olympi From Olympi take the (initially sealed) road to Potami and orchids can be found from the point the road becomes dirt track. Ophrys attaviria, Ophrys regis-fernandii, Ophrys cornutula, Ophrys parosica, Ophrys minutula, Ophrys lindia. * Emborios This is a town on the south east coast of the island and the coastal hinterland, particularly in the vicinity of the Pyrgi road, is home to a large number of orchid species, including Ophrys cesmeensis. Northern Chios * Mount Pelineo Much of the north east corner of Chios is mountainous, with Mount Pelineo dominating. This is a large area with great orchid interest but with limited access to the car driver. Most roads are unsealed and many in poor condition, but although often challenging they are usually usable with care.The towns of Kardamyla, Pitious and Fita are useful starting points for trips into the hills. Ophrys basilissa, Ophrys omegaifera, Ophrys pelinaea, Ophrys dodekanensis, Ophrys reinholdii, Ophrys sitiaca, Orchis provincialis, Dactylorhiza romana. * Psiles (Katavasi) The road from Sidhirounda to Psiles and on to Fita passes through a region of high garrigue and in suitable uncultivated areas, is home to many orchid species.
